During the genocide and shortly after, there were cases of adoption of Rwandan children. Due to distance and lack of information, some of the adopted children remained distanced from existing relatives in Rwanda for over 20 years.
The Government of Rwanda has always been committed to the preservation of history and the wellbeing of Rwandans wherever they may be. The Embassy of Rwanda in the United States avails itself to facilitating Rwandans who were adopted from Rwanda to reconnect with their country.
